Student Spotlight | David Tutor

In 2000, the Alabama Affordable Housing Association (AAHA) created a education scholarship program for residents of member-owned apartment properties in Alabama. The scholarship funds are donated by the owners, contractors, architects, accountants, property management companies, investors, lenders, developers, and various vendors that make up AAHA’s membership as well as other non-member individuals. Since its inception, the AAHA resident scholarship fund has awarded more than $500,000 in college and vocational scholarships. 

Meet David Tutor:

David Tutor of Shelby is a quiet, unassuming young man with dreams that might seem unexpected. The youngest child of his family and a former high school football player, Tutor has his sights set on a future as a chemist or a chemical engineer. 

“It interests me,” he said. “In high school when I took the basic course, I understood it very well and made good grades.”

With an AAHA scholarship in hand, Tutor is working toward that dream in his first year at Jefferson State Community College. While nervous about stepping out into the college arena and outside of his support system of friends and teachers, he said he is, “Excited about getting to start a new opportunity.”

Tutor’s father, a maintenance worker with Shoals Mill in Columbiana, suggested he apply for the AAHA scholarship. “I greatly appreciate it,” Tutor said. “It will really help pay for books. With that and federal student aid, I probably won’t have to pay for anything.”
