Celebrating Ellen Woodward Potts: USA TODAY Woman of the Year

March 07, 2025

Ellen Woodward Potts, the esteemed executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa, has been rightfully honored as one of USA TODAY's Women of the Year. This accolade celebrates her unwavering dedication to community service and her exceptional blend of compassion and business acumen.

A native of Huntsville, Alabama, Ellen's academic journey led her to earn a bachelor’s degree in finance from Birmingham–Southern College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Alabama. Her professional path reflects a harmonious fusion of financial expertise and heartfelt commitment to community upliftment.

Ellen's association with Habitat for Humanity began in 1997 when she moved to Tuscaloosa and started volunteering. Her passion for the mission led her to serve as secretary of the board until March 2013, when she assumed the role of interim executive director. By July 2013, her position became permanent, marking the beginning of a transformative era for the organization.

Under Ellen's visionary leadership, Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa has achieved remarkable milestones. Notably, the organization is collaborating with The Builders Group to develop the Milestone Neighborhood in West Tuscaloosa, a project that will introduce 32 new affordable homes to the area. This initiative not only addresses housing needs but also provides invaluable job training opportunities for local high school students and individuals served by United Cerebral Palsy, equipping them with essential skills for future careers.

Ellen's influence extends beyond her professional endeavors. She is an active elder and choir member at First Presbyterian Church, reflecting her deep-rooted commitment to her faith and community. Her personal life is enriched by her 31-year marriage to Dr. Daniel Potts, with whom she has two accomplished daughters.

At the Alabama Housing Finance Authority, we are proud to call Ellen our friend. Her relentless dedication to improving the lives of others serves as a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the profound impact that compassion, when paired with strategic vision, can have on a community.
