AHFA Affordable Housing Resident Jayson Butts Earns College Scholarship to Help Family, Secure Future

December 05, 2023

AHFA shines its latest Student Spotlight on Jayson Butts, a 2023 graduate of Robertsdale High School in Robertsdale. He is attending the University of South Alabama and plans to pursue a career in marine biology.

Butts received a 2023 resident scholarship award from the Alabama Affordable Housing Association (AAHA). He went on to earn a scholarship from the national Council for Affordable and Rural Housing (CARH).

In his scholarship application, Butts wrote, "The AAHA scholarship would mean so much to me so I can help my family pay for college. Even from a young age, I knew we couldn't afford expensive things. Most of my life I grew up with one parent, my mom, but we were still a complete family. My mom, brother, and sister were always there for me. We made great memories together and Mom and I are still creating more. My mom says she won't cry at my graduation, but I know she will. She deserves to cry and be proud because she has provided for our family for many years."

He lives in Baldwin County’s Loxley Station, an affordable multifamily community financed in part by AHFA. Applicants must be accepted or enrolled in an accredited vocational or technical school, college or university; have at least a "B" average or 3.0 GPA; and meet all other application criteria. Since 2000, AAHA has awarded $1 million in scholarships to assist more than 100 college graduates.
